A box-type substation (abbreviated as box substation) is a compact, integrated distribution device that combines high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage switchgear, electric energy metering equipment, and reactive power compensation devices into one or several enclosures according to a specific wiring scheme. It is suitable for rated voltages of 10/0.4KV in three-phase AC systems, used for line and power distribution purposes.
Compared to European-style box substations of the same capacity, the YB-12/0.4 Box-type Substation (High and Low Voltage Prefabricated Substation) has a more rational structure. European-style box substations house transformers and conventional high-voltage electrical equipment in the same metal enclosure, resulting in high transformer temperatures, difficulties in heat dissipation, and reduced output. Additionally, they use conventional high-voltage load switches, fuses, and low-voltage switchgear, making European-style box substations larger in size. American-style box substations differ structurally from European-style ones.
The YBW-12 Prefabricated Substation is a type of integrated substation manufactured and assembled in advance at the factory for the end of medium-voltage distribution networks. It includes transformers, high-voltage switchgear and control equipment, low-voltage switchgear and control equipment, internal wiring (cables, busbars, etc.), metering, compensation, lightning arresters, and other auxiliary equipment, all configured within a common enclosure or a set of enclosures, and has passed type tests according to relevant standards. 1. Relay Protection Function
The integrated substation automation system must possess all the functions of conventional substation system protection and component protection devices, as well as monitoring system capabilities. That is, when the software or hardware of the system network fails and exits operation, the relay protection units continue to operate normally. In addition to relay protection functions, microprocessor-based protection must also have other capabilities.
(1) Analog quantity display function. The system should be able to display analog parameters such as current, voltage, active power, reactive power, and electric energy, and should still meet operational monitoring requirements even when the communication network is down.
(2) Fault recording function. The system should be able to display fault time, current and voltage magnitudes, switch status changes, and protection operation status.
(3) Capable of storing multiple sets of settings, with local modification and display of settings.
(4) Communication with the monitoring system, able to receive commands from the monitoring system, select and modify settings, and send fault information, protection operation status, current settings, and self-diagnostic signals. In addition to local operation, it should also enable remote query and setting of protection parameters, with remote/local locking, operation authority locking, and other functions.

This standard type of box substation is a typical product and one of the most widely used European-style box substations. The standard type is suitable for areas where sufficient space is available for equipment and where the power supply load is critical. Its enclosure dimensions are up to 3.6 meters in length, 2.2 meters in width, and 2.5 meters in height, made of metal or non-metal materials. The main transformer capacity for 10kV box substations is 400kVA, 500kVA, and 630kVA. The standard type includes two typical structural schemes: ring network type with low-voltage metering and terminal type with low-voltage metering.
Compact Type Box-type Substation
To adapt to different local environmental conditions for box substation installation, the State Grid, based on the standard type box substation, removed the low-voltage side main incoming switch and low-voltage side outgoing line disconnector, reduced the low-voltage side outgoing lines to 4 circuits, reduced the compensation capacitors to no more than 4 circuits, lowered the compensation capacity to 15% of the transformer's rated capacity, and made other detailed adjustments to form the compact type box substation. Replacement Type Box-type Substation
In fact, based on the design dimensions of this type of box substation, we prefer to call it a miniaturized box substation. They also belong to the 10kV box-type substation system. Without affecting power supply, they can be directly replaced using the original foundation, eliminating the need for low-voltage main incoming switches and outgoing line disconnectors. The installation dimensions of the replacement type box substation do not exceed the maximum dimensions of the original foundation, and the positions of high and low voltage cable holes correspond to those of the original American-style transformer. The specifications of the replacement type box substation are generally 2250*1300*2300mm. Based on the standard type 400kVA, 500kVA, and 630kVA European-style box substations, the low-voltage side outgoing line disconnector or low-voltage side main incoming switch is removed, compensation capacitors are limited to no more than 4 circuits, and the compensation capacity is reduced to the rated capacity.
